Haig Point Ferry Company to Begin Serving Daufuskie Island

July 28, 2016 – Daufuskie Island, SC – On Monday, August 1, the Haig Point Ferry Company will launch the Daufuskie Island Ferry Service linking Melrose Landing on Daufuskie with the Palmetto Bay Marina on Hilton Head.

The Ferry Service will make four round trips daily (Monday – Sunday) – two in the morning and two in the evening.   A round trip costs $35.00. Tickets are $17.50 per ride. Children 5 years old and younger ride for free. Tickets for full-time Daufuskie Island residents will continue to be provided by Palmetto Breeze at no additional charge.

The daily ferry schedule includes two round-trips in the morning and two round-trips in the afternoon. Morning departures, Monday through Friday, leave Palmetto Bay Marina at 6:00 am and 8:00 am and leave Melrose Landing at 7:00 am and 9:00 am. On Saturday and Sunday, morning departure times are two hours later – leaving the Palmetto Bay Marina at 8:00 am and 10:00 am and leaving Melrose Landing at 9:00 am and 11:00 am.   Afternoon departures, Monday through Sunday, leave Palmetto Bay Marina at 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm and leave Melrose Landing at 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm.

“Improving the ferry system is vital” for people to be able to get to medical appointments, shop for food, and go to and from work, Daufuskie Island Councilman Chuck Hunter said. “These are critical lifeline issues.”

The long-standing contract between J&W Corp. and Beaufort County, which provided public ferry services between Freeport Landing on Daufuskie Island and Broad Creek Marina on Hilton Head Island, ended in July. Under that service, riders could not leave the island any earlier than 8:15 a.m. and had to return by 4 p.m. Saturday service was available only twice a month and, during the winter, there was no service on Sundays.

The Haig Point Ferry Co., which currently operates private ferries for residents and visitors to the Haig Point private residential community, will provide service Monday through Sunday beginning at 6:00 am and ending at 6:00 pm. A one-way late-night trip to Daufuskie is also being considered.

According to Jim Woodward, Haig Point representative, steps for providing dependable, quality ferry service began in late June. Issues such as contracts, approvals, insurance, financial aspects, ferry landing preparations, ticketing procedures, trained personnel, street signage, parking, and fleet readiness have now been addressed. In the opinion of Kevin McCarthy, chief executive officer of the island’s Bloody Point Golf Club and Resort, hundreds of jobs and tens of millions of dollars have been lost because of Daufuskie Island’s longstanding ferry problem. “It is our hope that this daily ferry service will have a positive impact on Daufuskie both economically and socially in the years to come,” added Doug Egly, Haig Point CEO.

About Haig Point:  Haig Point is a private residential community encompassing 1,050 acres on historic Daufuskie Island which is located just off the coast of South Carolina between Hilton Head Island and Savannah, Georgia.

The residents of Haig Point are committed to preserving the pristine and peaceful way of life unique to the Island and to helping maintain the island’s historical landmarks. The archaeological restoration of properties within Haig Point and the residents’ active support of the Daufuskie Island Historical Foundation are just two examples which demonstrate this commitment.

The community is accessible by Haig Point’s ferry and water taxi system.  Twenty-nine holes of championship golf, three clubs, equestrian center, six Har-Tru® tennis courts and two pools are highlighted amenities.

Area Golfers Dominated the
Coastal Carolina Junior Challenge at Haig Point

The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour’s Coastal Carolina Junior Challenge returned to Haig Point on July 9-10 and area golfers dominated the score board.

In the Boys 15-18 division, Bryson Nimmer of Bluffton, SC,  shot a final round 64 to win by seven shots. Finishing in second place was Jonathon Phillips of Hardeeville, SC who shot rounds of 71-74 to finish with a two day total of 145. The Girls 15-18 division was packed with excitement throughout the weekend. Kayla Kozak of Bluffton, SC birdied the first playoff hole to take home the victory over Layne-Marie Carter of Lyons, GA.  The Girls 11-14 champion was Ashlee Richardson of Simpsonville, SC and taking home the victory in the Boys 11-14 division was Mason Williams of Bridgeport, West Virginia who won after he shot 72-77 for a two day total of 149.

The format was a 36 hole stroke play tournament  open to boy and girl golfers between the ages of 11-18 and the incentives were high. Winners in each division received an exemption into the 2016 Tour Championship December 3-4, 2016, and Junior Golf Scoreboard Ranking (JGS).  The top 10 finishers received points towards year-end honors which include state teams, all HJGT teams, and the Hurricane Cup; South Carolina Junior Golf Association Heritage Points (SCJGA); and Tarheel Youth Golf Association Points (TYGA).

For more information on this event, please refer to the HJGT website (www.hjgt.org/basic-membership/)

Haig Point’s Rees Jones Signature Course gave the competitors quite a challenge.  Originally designed in 1986, Jones returned to Haig Point in 2007 for modifications that have given the course the reputation as one of the best in the nation.  Haig Point’s stunning Signature course has appeared several times in Golf Digest’s “America’s 100 Greatest Courses” and “Best in State,” and it earned a coveted position in Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 in the World.” Haig Point was recognized in 2016 as one of the top courses in South Carolina.  In his Designer Notes, Rees Jones says, “The ferry ride across the Calibogue Sound sets the tone for golf on this small island off Hilton Head. It’s one of the most beautiful settings for a golf course in the game. On hole 17 you play across the saltwater marsh to a sandy peninsula green. This course has been on Golf Digest’s Top 100 list since 1989.”  (http://www.reesjonesinc.com/haig-point/ )

Haig Point’s String of Tennis Wins
Can you string your racquet for a string of wins or is there more?

Daufuskie Island, SC: How does a relatively small community like Haig Point consistently produce a string of wins?  For the seventh year in a row, Haig Point has sent at least one team to the South Carolina State Championship.  The men’s 55-and-over teams have represented Hilton Head at the state tournament for each of the last three years.  This year, the women’s 3.5 55-and-over team, finished in the top four.

You might immediately give credit for this record to their excellent Tennis Director, Ron Gwyn, or to the talent of the individuals on the teams.  But most local teams have excellent Tennis Pros and great players.  What’s the difference?

In the opinion of this year’s women’s team captain, Debbie McKeeman, “The secret is our community.  We’re only a golf cart ride away from the courts.  We generally don’t need to reserve courts and there’s always a player or two ready for a spontaneous game.  We’re friends who play together all the time.”

The result is the players get to know each other’s strengths and weaknesses intimately.  “In doubles, each of us knows where our partner will be on any shot and whether or not she might need help,” says McKeeman.  Of course, in the small world of Haig Point, the team captain also knows her players well.  She knows how they relate to one another.  She knows how to put together a line-up.  She knows how to string together wins.

About Haig Point on Daufuskie Island

Located between Hilton Head Island and Savannah, historic Daufuskie Island is the southernmost sea island in South Carolina. It is 5 miles long by 2.7 miles wide – approximately 5,000 acres. With 3.5 miles of pristine beachfront, Daufuskie is surrounded by the waters of the Calibogue Sound, the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean.

Haig Point, a private residential community, encompasses 1,050 acres on the northern tip of Daufuskie.

The community is accessible by the Haig Point ferry and water taxi system.  Twenty-nine holes of championship golf, three clubs, equestrian center, six Har-Tru® tennis courts and two pools are highlighted amenities.

History of Haig Point

The history of Haig Point, (also known as Hague’s Point or Haig’s Point) reaches back into the colonial days when George Haig I, a Scottish merchant and Indian trader, purchased property in 1733 on the northern end of Daufuskie Island.

The land remained in the Haig family for three generations until George Haig III sold the property around 1810 to the Mongin family. David John Mongin passed away in 1823, and his wife Sarah married Herman Blodgett in 1825. Sarah and Herman had been married for just eight years, when Sarah died in 1833.

Herman Blodgett then purchased Haig Point Plantation from the Mongin family, and remarried in 1837, taking Catherine Hall as his second wife.

On the northern end of his Haig Point Plantation, Blodgett constructed an impressive tabby mansion. Slave quarters, also built of tabby, were located nearby, and an avenue of live oaks lined the road to the mansion. Blodgett sold Haig Point Plantation in 1850 to Squire Pope, who owned multiple plantations on Hilton Head.

The tranquil plantation life was interrupted forever when Yankees arrived on the Sea Islands in 1861. After the battle of Port Royal ended on November 7, 1861, Union forces pushed south towards Savannah. Passing by Daufuskie Island, they spied Haig Point Mansion and decided its timbers would be useful in creating a road across boggy Jones Island, which lies just south of Daufuskie. The plantation mansion was soon pilfered, and the remains burned.

After the Civil War ended, the government rebuilt and added lights along the South Carolina coast to mark the entrance to Calibogue Sound, which runs between the southern end of Hilton Head Island, and Daufuskie Island. An aggregate of five acres on Haig Point was acquired from the Pope family for one of these lighthouses.

In 1925, the lighthouse property was sold to M.V. Hass and passed through the hands of several owners in quick succession finally being used in the 1930s as a hunting lodge until it was abandoned. From that point on Haig Point Plantation and the Lighthouse were never owned by the same person until George H. Bostwick purchased Haig Point Plantation in 1961 and Haig Point Lighthouse in 1965.

The more recent history of Haig Point can best be traced by following the life of Charles Cauthen who bought a large parcel of Daufuskie from the Bostwick family in the 1970's.

With a background in real estate, Cauthen pursued a real estate development project that would capitalized on the pristine beauty of the island while respecting the heritage of its people.

Seeking an investor for the project, Cauthen met with the Dallas-based Halliburton Company and was able obtain the financial commitment needed to begin the development project in earnest. Cauthen is on record as having planned and permitted the Haig Point PUD (including the Webb and Oak Ridge properties which Halliburton had also purchased).

In 1984, International Paper agreed to follow Cauthen's guidelines for developing the property and purchased the Haig Point tract.

The rest is history. IP stayed true to Cauthen's dream: to preserve the natural beauty of the island to respect the historical landmarks that are part of the Haig Point property. There are no cars. The community is accessible by the Haig Point ferry and water taxi system.  Twenty-nine holes of championship golf, three clubs, equestrian center, six Har-Tru® tennis courts and two pools are highlighted amenities.
